Privacy

This notice covers the Outrivia browser game, including the Daily, Unlimited and challenge links. You can play without an account, and we never ask for your name or email address.

What stays in your browser

Outrivia checks your answers in your browser, using question files it downloads from us. Only answers the game turns down are sent to us, as described below. Your Daily progress and results, your streak, your nickname, your sound and music settings, your chosen Unlimited length and the graphics quality the game picked for your device are saved in this browser’s local storage.

Clearing this site’s browser data removes them. They don’t follow you to another device, and a private window may discard them when you close it.

Challenges and results

When you finish a run we store your nickname, your answers and scores, the time, and a random identifier created in your browser. People who open a challenge link can see the nicknames and scores on its board. We don’t store your email or IP address with this data. To have a run removed, write to hello@outrivia.com with its link.

Answers the game turns down

When the game turns down an answer, or you tap “Should this count? Tell us”, we store the prompt and the answer’s text in lower case without accents or punctuation, with a count and when it last came up. Nothing that says who typed it goes with it: no nickname, identifier or IP address. We read these lists to add the answers we missed.

Anonymous game statistics

The page loads a script from our own installation of Plausible Analytics, a cookieless analytics tool that we run on our own server. It counts page visits and a few game events: a run starting (and whether it was picked up again) and finishing, the first question appearing, the first key you press in a run, the band of each answer, opening and using Share, opening a challenge link, opening the answers review, the graphics quality your device settles on, and which address a missing page was asked for.

These events carry game values only, such as the mode, the question number, the band, the points and people of a finished run, its title, how many players a challenge holds, and how long the first question and your first key press took. They never include what you typed, your nickname or your challenge link, and they contain no personal data. Plausible sets no cookies and doesn’t store your IP address; for a page visit it records the page, the site that sent you, and your browser, device type and country. Blocking the script, for example with a content blocker, stops the statistics without affecting the game.

Loading the game

Your browser requests the page, images, fonts, sounds, scripts and question files from our hosting provider. As with any website, those requests reveal technical information such as your IP address, your browser and the address requested to the services that handle them. Cached files may stay on your device so later visits load faster.

Sharing and challenge links are your choice

When a run ends, the result panel makes image cards and a short text. The text holds the Daily number or “Unlimited”, how many people you pulled, one coloured circle per question, your title, how you did against the friends in a challenge, and a challenge link. Every card carries the link as a QR code, and the best-moment card also shows one of your answers.

A challenge link opens your stored run: its board shows each player’s nickname, title and score, and during the game your friend sees the answer you gave after each of theirs. If the link could not reach us when you shared, it carries your nickname and answers in the link itself instead, with those of the earlier players, up to five in all, and anyone who has that link can read them. You decide whether to copy the text, save the image or send them through another app, and that app handles them under its own privacy policy.

Your controls

You can mute the game’s sounds or turn its music off, use your system’s reduced-motion setting, and remove saved progress and your nickname through your browser’s site-data controls. No account is needed for any of this.
